2012 NATIONAL ORCHESTRAS MEETING

From Sunday, May 27 until Tuesday, May 29, 2012 Orchestras Canada will be hosting its annual National Orchestras Meeting and AGM in Montréal, Québec.

Day 1: Sunday, May 27
Locations: Day session at HEC Montréal; cocktail/dinner location to be confirmed
1-1:30 p.m.: opening remarks
1:30-2:30 p.m.: Presentation by Kelly Hill on his recent Financial and Statistical Analysis of 50 Canadian Orchestras: 2004-05 to 2009-10
2:30-3:00 p.m.: coffee break  - Sponsored by Arsenal à Musique
3:00-4:30 p.m.: Presentation by Robert Flanagan, professor of labour economics at Stanford University, inspired by his book, The Perilous Life of Symphony Orchestras. Responses from Kelly Hill, Hill Strategies; Robert Fraser, Organization of Canadian Symphony Musicians; one other, to be confirmed.
5:30p.m. – 7:30p.m.: Cocktail reception (hosted by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and le Conseil des Arts de Montréal); location: 1210, rue Sherbrooke Est. This event is open to all full program registrants.

Day 2: Monday, May 28
Locations: Day session at HEC Montréal; events from 6:30 p.m. at la Maison symphonique
8:30 p.m.: Coffe and tea available
8:45-9:30: OC Annual General Meeting + presentation on OC’s new planning framework
9:30-10:30: Keynote presentation, Stephen Huddart, CEO of the J.W. McConnell Foundation

11-12:30: peer breakout sessions
12:30-1:30: lunch
1:30-3: 2 concurrent sessions, each led by 3 HEC faculty members. Q & A sessions included.

3:30-4:30: Presentation by – and Q&A with – Robert Sirman, director of the Canada Council for the Arts: the current situation in Ottawa, how Council is responding, and what impact the response will have on Canadian artists and arts organizations.
6:30-7:30 p.m.: Tour of la Maison symphonique, featuring acoustician Tateo Nakajima & OSM staff
8 p.m.: Concert by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, led by Music Director Kent Nagano, and featuring Cirque Eloïze and violinist Andrew Wan, in repertoire by Berlioz, Shostakovich, and Ravel. Each full program registrant will get 1 ticket to this sold-out concert with registration; additional tickets are VERY limited and will be allotted in order of registration date.
Approximately 10 p.m.: Vin d’honneur at la Maison symphonique, graciously hosted by the OSM

Day 3: Tuesday, May 29 – Day session at HEC Montréal
8:00 a.m.: Coffee, tea and a light breakfast available

9-9:45 a.m.: A conversation with OSM Music Director Kent Nagano, hosted by CBC producer/host Kelly Rice
9:45-10:30: peer breakout sessions
10:30-11: coffee break – Sponsored by Long & McQuade
11-12 noon: National meeting wrap-up: setting OC’s advocacy and service priorities for 2012-13, and next steps for Canadian orchestras.
