MUSICAL DIRECTOR

The Strathcona Symphony Orchestra is a 60-piece community group entering its 14th year. This non-professional group is open to individuals of all ages – advanced students through to retired, music loving seniors from our local community and beyond. We rehearse weekly from September through May, culminating in three performance week-ends, and enjoy programming a variety of music from across the ages.

Our candidate will possess a degree in music, have a conducting background and be conversant with strings – ideally someone who would choose to set up a private string teaching studio. The need for strings education will be increasing with the upcoming retirement of local teachers. A composing conductor would have the opportunity to have his/her works performed publicly by the group.

We are located in the amazing Comox Valley on Canada’s Vancouver Island where you can mountain ski in the morning, golf the afternoon and kayak on the ocean in the evening – all in one day – truly! Our climate is moderate, summer through winter, and all outdoor activities thrive here. The local arts community is prolific – festivals, concerts, musicals, and small group performances are too numerous to attend all. The visual arts make an enormous contribution to our lifestyle, and farm-to-fork cuisine is at its finest with local wineries, craft breweries and distilleries available to accompany your meal. The view? Mountains, old growth forests or ocean panorama…you choose!

The Valley is experiencing a population surge and the future conductor of the SSO would play a very important role in the development of classical symphonic music here. In the words of our concert master (and founding member),” Our vision is to raise the SSO from a pay-to-play experience, to one where the orchestra can pay a modest honorarium to its musicians. With this in mind, the successful candidate will also need to be somewhat of an adventurous spirit, with a willingness to build and create their own legacy.”

If you are this person and would like more information, please send your request by email to Nancy at librariansso@gmail.com. We are looking forward to meeting you!
