Position: Music Librarian
Reports to: Executive Director
The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO) has played an important role in shaping the cultural landscape of the City of Hamilton and the surrounding region. Led by Music Director Gemma New, the HPO is Hamilton’s only professional orchestra. The HPO’s concert season is comprised of nine mainstage performances. In the 18/19 Season, the HPO will also present two Family Concerts, two new music performances and multiple chamber music presentations across the community. The HPO has a core of 32 musicians, four full-time and five part-time administrative/production staff, including Operations and Personnel Manager, Artistic Administration Assistant and Music Librarian.
The Music Librarian is responsible for locating, preparing, distributing and collecting music for HPO services, including both chamber and orchestral music. Working collaboratively with the Music Director, guest conductors, soloists, the Personnel Manager, and principal players, the Music Librarian will ensure accurate preparation of the music including marking string bowings, numbering measures, and inserting cuts.
The Music Librarian leads the bowing process in the months leading up to concerts, in collaboration with string principals. Folders are made available to the players at least three weeks before the first rehearsal, and the Music Librarian is present for the first rehearsal of each concert cycle or until all repertoire for a given concert has been played once.
In the event of their absence, the Librarian will arrange for the Assistant Librarian to be present and accomplish necessary tasks in their absence. Evening and weekend work will be required as most HPO performances take place on Saturday evenings from September to May each year.
Additionally, the Music Librarian will be responsible for organizing and maintaining the music library, making recommendations for the acquisition of materials, and organizing acquisition including music rentals as well as purchase. The Music Librarian will prepare music for all HPO services including self-produced and sold services. Administrative duties include tracking photocopying and other activities, providing program information, and preparing quotations for budgeting purposes.
The Music Librarian will be responsible for working with the Assistant Librarian to accomplish duties.
The successful candidate must have considerable knowledge of classical music and opera, the ability to read music, and preferably, experience in music preparation and librarian duties. The candidate must have a proactive working style, be highly organized with strong attention to detail, have the ability to work independently and meet firm deadlines, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as computer skills, and be physically capable of lifting heavy items.
