Music4Life Ensemble community string orchestra is seeking an enthusiastic AND creative individual for the position of Music Director/Conductor. If you aspire to assist string musicians of all ages and skill levels achieve their musical best then we want YOU!
Based out of Ajax, Ontario, our friendly and welcoming environment will allow you to direct paid, professional section leads as well as amateur learners through their musical journey. As Music Director / Conductor, you will define the musical program for each season and conduct our players through to performance success. About Music4Life Ensemble
Music4Life Ensemble is a non-profit, amateur community string ensemble in Ajax, Ontario. Established in 2016, we are the fastest growing orchestra in the Durham Region. As a learning orchestra consisting of 25-30 players, our objective is to provide a friendly and welcoming forum for string musicians, of all ages, to learn and play together. Our ensemble provides a unique experience for amateur players such that they are able to play and perform along-side skilled music teachers and professionals who are also part of the practicing and performing group. This arrangement provides an excellent learning environment for new players and is a true compliment to traditional private lessons.
Through our fun and encouraging organization, members gain performance experience by playing in our ticketed performance each season for families, friends and our community at large. Our more advanced players are featured in quartet/quintet performances for community and private events.
-Conduct weekly music rehearsals, dictating the volume, phrasing and tempo of each piece, and conduct the group during performances throughout the season.
-Plan rehearsals to ensure performance readiness
-Select music that will be a good fit for the musicians and offer a challenge, that is in line with our program objectives and appeals to our audience
-Select music in a timely manner and ensure coordination with the ensemble coordinator to ensure timely distribution to members
-Create concert themes that align to our program objectives
-Work closely with our Board of Directors, providing musical guidance/expertise
-Promote our orchestra and assist where possible with marketing and recruiting efforts
-Transpose music as needed to ensure violin, viola, cello and contrabass lines are in line with the skills and capabilities of the section players
-Choose soloists/guest performers for shows to meet the needs of our audience and performance theme
-Oversee section leads in coaching and playing techniques for the learning musicians
Job Skills & Qualifications
-A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in music or equivalent training and experience
-Extensive knowledge of string orchestra music (violin, viola, cello, dbl bass)
-Prior experience as a conductor
-Composition skills to transpose / arrange music
-Familiarity with musical instrument digital interfaces and editing software
-Creative thinking to bring out the full potential of a musical piece and our musicians
-The ability to encourage and motivate members
-The ability to organize and meet deadlines
-Good interpersonal and communication skills
-A willingness to work closely with Board of Directors
-An active leadership role within the Orchestra and function as an ambassador to the community
-Availability for Saturday rehearsals 4-6pm, with flexibly for concerts and special events at other times
-Ability to competently play one or more string instruments
-Ability to play in our advanced quartets/quintets throughout the Durham Region and GTA

Salary: $40.00 /hour
