Music Director and Principal Conductor

Founded in 1985, the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) is one of Toronto’s leading community orchestras. Known for its musicianship and engaging programs, CBSO is committed to providing high-quality performances to its audiences. The Music Director and Principal Conductor is responsible for the planning, preparation and implementation of CBSO’s season. The successful candidate will be responsible for the artistic development / management of the organization and will report to CBSO’s Board of Directors.

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Music or equivalent experience
• A minimum of three years experience as an orchestral conductor
• Extensive knowledge of orchestral repertoire
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (both written and verbal)
• Excellent organizational skills, experience setting and meeting deadlines

• A graduate level Degree in Music
• Experience working with ensembles containing both professional and amateur musicians
• Well connected within the GTA music community
• Reside near work location (P.C. Ho Theatre, 5183 Sheppard Ave. E., Scarborough, Ontario)

• Plan CBSO’s season, with the Music Selection Committee, to select repertoire that is suitable, in line with program objectives, and appeals to CBSO’s audiences
• Plan and conduct weekly music rehearsals, and conduct concerts throughout the season
• Work closely with the Orchestra Manager
• Encourage and motivate orchestra members
• Be a leader and function as CBSO’s ambassador to the community
• Work closely with the Board of Directors
• Promote CBSO, assisting where possible with marketing and recruiting
• Select guest performers that strengthen CBSO’s commitment to high-quality engaging performances
• Oversee section leads to ensure a consistent artistic vision throughout the orchestra
• Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors

SALARY: Commensurate with experience
SCHEDULE: Monday evening rehearsals
