About the WSO
The mission of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra is to connect people of Windsor and Essex County through the power and passion of music. The focus is on making connections through performance and education. The desired result is a connected community that views the WSO as essential part of its cultural fabric. The Strategic Plan, completed in 2017, identifies Education and Community Outreach as priorities.
The Windsor Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has spanned three generations, with its roots in the boom years of the 1940’s to its present incarnation as the nation’s most dynamic regional orchestra.
The WSO’s primary catchment area is Windsor/Essex County. In the past two years, the WSO has also begun a series of performances in Chatham-Kent. The Orchestra is comprised of nineteen core musicians and twenty-four per service musicians. The orchestra’s thirty-three week season runs from September through May. Musicians also perform special, out-of-season concerts during the summer. Currently, the WSO reaches more than 10,000 elementary and secondary school students and performs ten to fifteen neighbourhood concerts a year. The WSO has an active Youth Orchestra and a volunteer Chorus. The WSO ‘s primary performance venue is the Capitol Theatre in Windsor. The Capitol Theatre is owned by the City of Windsor and managed by the WSO. The Theatre is centrally located in the City Centre; the Theatre and the WSO are leaders in the animation of an emerging cultural district.
Education and Community Outreach are part of the WSO’s strategic plan and emblematic of the organizational commitment to respond to and to reflect the region we serve.
