Founded in 1919, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) is the third largest symphony orchestra in Canada, and the largest performing arts organization in Western Canada. It has an annual operating budget of $16 million and performs 150 concerts each year in 16 different locations throughout Metro Vancouver, with its primary home being the historic Orpheum Theatre. The VSO delivers 13 acclaimed education programs reaching more than 50,000 young people annually and operates the VSO School of Music, a state-of-the-art community music school in the heart of downtown Vancouver, welcoming students from infancy to their golden years at all levels of playing ability. In the 2018/19 season, the VSO will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary and welcomes Maestro Otto Tausk as its new Music Director.
The VSO is delighted to be able to provide a major opportunity for a Canadian conductor to work on a daily basis with a leading professional symphony orchestra. As a key member of the VSO’s artistic staff, the Assistant Conductor will work full time under the direct supervision of Maestro Otto Tausk, and will have access to the many guest conductors and soloists who perform with the VSO throughout the season.
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra currently performs a 39-week Winter Season and 3-week Summer Season. The Assistant Conductor will be expected to attend all VSO rehearsals and cover programs; to conduct main series, family, pops, new music and other concerts as assigned; to contribute to season programming; and to additionally support the Music Director as requested.
Qualifications: Applicants for the position of Assistant Conductor must be Canadian citizens or have Permanent Resident status as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and will be required to reside in Vancouver for the duration of the contract. Candidates should have an advanced music degree or equivalent. An exceptional level of aural skill will be expected of the successful candidate.
Term: September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2021 (2-year term) Salary: $40,000 per season
