Two of Montreal’s most innovative classical ensembles are working together on a joint performance at the end of May: on May 30, Appassionata and the Ensemble contemporain de Montreal are partnering on a program entitled L’Amour Sorcier. The concert will be jointly conducted by ECM+ artistic director Veronique Lacroix and Appassionata music director Daniel Myssyk, and it features two new pieces written specially for the occasion by composers Analia Llugdar and Andrew Staniland, along with Ana Sokolović’s Nine Proverbs, and Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo. Not only is it a musically rich evening, the presentation will also feature original videos, projected onto a giant transparent screen with the musicians and soloists also visible on stage. Soloists for the evening are singer Julie Boulianne and electric guitarist Tim Brady, and the event takes place at the acoustically-superb Salle Pierre-Mercure.

From May 19-26, the members of I Musici de Montréal will embark on their third international tour of the season with a journey to Mexico for the Festival Cultural de Mayo. They’ll be led by Richard Lee (currently resident conductor with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra) and they’ll present a program of music by Tchaikovksy and Mussorgsky (in an arrangement made for I Musici by founding music director Yuli Turovsky). The Festival Cultural de Mayo facilitates exchange between Mexican artists and international colleagues, and this year, the focus is on Quebec – with over twenty artists and organizations from Quebec representing music, film, dance, circus arts and visual arts.

Meanwhile, members of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra have joined their long-time collaborators at Opera Atelier to accompany OA’s production of Lully’s Armide at the “spiritual home” of Baroque opera – the Royal Opera House at Versailles. You can read more about just what it took to make these performances happen, here.

The Calgary Philharmonic has launched its 2012-13 season, its seventh under the leadership of music director Roberto Minczuk. It’s a big season, and here are some high points: a two-week genre-crossing festival entitled War and Peace that includes a massive new work, “Afghanistan: Requiem for a Generation”, by Jeffrey Ryan with poet Suzanne Steele; Holst’s The Planets, with images from NASA; a performance by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta; the second season of the CPO’s Rush Hour series; and a Pops series dance extravaganza featuring stars from the hit TV series Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance.

The Oakville Symphony, led by music director Roberto de Clara, has announced its 2012-13 season, a four-concert subscription program (featuring repertoire by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Verdi, Mozart and Dvorak) with two additional family-oriented programs. The OSO is almost always sold out on subscription – and we can see why from their program plans!

The Sudbury Symphony (under Dr. Victor Sawa) has launched its 2012-13 season, a six concert series that includes a family concert, light classics, operatic repertoire, a world premiere (by composer Jason Noble) and classical masterworks. The series showcases the talents of the SSO’s own musicians, along with guests, and will also welcome pops conductor Brian Jackson to the SSO’s podium for certain programs.

The Ontario Philharmonic, under Music Director Marco Parisotto, continues its growth with an intriguing 2012-13 season that sees two performances of each program – one at home in Oshawa, and the second in Toronto. Soloists include such greats as violinist Shlomo Mintz, pianist Anton Kuerti and Angela Meade. As well, the OP will present Handel’s Messiah with Amadeus Choir and brilliant young soloists. Featured orchestral works include Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, Brahms’s Symphony No. 4, Strauss’ Four Last Songs and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4.

The Canada Council for the Arts has announced the appointment of Aimé Dontigny as the Head of the Music Section, succeeding Russell Kelley, who retired in December. He is an accomplished electro-acoustic musician and administrator who’s been working at the Council since 2007, and he starts right away. Congratulations, Aimé!

Congratulations to the gifted young musicians who took part in NAC Orchestra Bursary Competition this year. The big winners were bassoonist Darren Hicks, flutist Christian Paquette, clarinettist Nicholas Galuban, harpist Antoine Malette-Chénier, and trombonist Riccardo Nazario del Castello, with honourable mentions going to flutists Lara Deutsch and Graham McVeety and oboist Aidan Dugan. The NAC Orchestra Bursary was established in 1979 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the National Arts Centre Orchestra and to thank the people of the National Capital Region for their support during the Orchestra’s first decade. The first competition took place in 1981. The Bursary Committee and Jury were chaired for the second year by Roderick Bell, passionate music lover, former Canadian Ambassador to Jordan and Saudi Arabia, and an active volunteer at the National Arts Centre.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation has announced that Andrea Cohen, a community health services executive, has been named as its next CEO, succeeding Robin Cardozo.

At its late May concerts with pianist Yevgeny Sudbin, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will also celebrate the 40th anniversary of its association with Conductor Laureate Kazuyoshi Akiyama. Amazingly, Maestro Akiyama began his twelve year tenure as VSO Music Director in 1972.

The Calgary Philharmonic has advised that the 2012-13 season brings a promotion for Mélanie Léonard, the CPO’s Resident Conductor for the last four seasons. Effective in September, Ms. Léonard will take on the role of Associate Conductor.

Luce Moreau, President and CEO of the Orchestre Metropolitain since 2008, has stepped down from that role, effective immediately.

The Saskatoon Symphony has announced its 2012-13 season, designed by music director Victor Sawa to show off the orchestra’s artistic capacities and show-case some of the relationships the organization has developed with its new neighbours in the 20th Street district. The line-up includes a six concert Masters Series, four POPS concerts, a chamber series, special events, and a new contemporary music program called ‘The Core’, a two-concert series presented in partnership with PAVED Arts, an artist-run centre in the 20th Street neighbourhood.

The Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, under music director Arthur Post, has announced its 2012-13 season – and it’s a busy one, consisting of 28 separate events over 5 different series (and some special events, as well.) Highlighted soloists include Yi-Jia Suzanne Hou (violin), R. Carlos Nakai (native American flute), André Laplante (piano), blues artist Matt Andersen, tenor Michael Burgess, and a special performance by Ben Heppner.

The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal has announced its summer season, an imaginatively laid-out program that includes a pair of free outdoor concerts, and appearances at festivals in Orford, Lanaudière and at home in Montréal. The big news in the announcement is A Cool Classical Journey, a brand-new festival at the Maison symphonique and other venues at Place des Arts, featuring 20 different 45-minute long concerts performed by international artists—all taking place on Saturday, August 11! Featured artists include the OSM (which is featured four times throughout the day), Canadian Brass, the Tetzlaff Trio, pianists Lars Vogt and Marc-André Hamelin, and many, many others.

The Orchestre symphonique de Longueuil has launched a new fundraising event – and they’ve got some high-powered (if slow-moving) help along the way. The orchestra has recently announced that retired Montreal Alouette football star Bruno Heppell will be joining a team of runners led by music director Marc David and made up of board members, musicians and friends of the orchestra to take part in the orchestra’s first ever partnership with the Club des Coureurs sur Route du Mont Saint-Bruno, scheduled for June 10. The runners will complete a course of 5, 10 or 20 kilometers through the wooded trails of Mont Saint-Bruno National Park – and each runner has set the goal of raising no less than $100 per kilometre completed. All funds raised will go to the Fondation OSDL, to help underwrite the costs of the orchestra’s 2012-13 season. For more information, please visit osdl.ca.

Peterborough’s Kawartha Youth Orchestra celebrates both Mother’s Day and the final concert of its 10th anniversary season with what they’re describing as “a blow-out season finale…powered by the return of our fiercely-talented alumni from 10 years of marvelous music-making.” The program, led by Music Director Michael Newnham, includes everything from the Pink Panther theme to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Alumni pursuing musical careers include violinist Laura D’Angelo, flutists Tim Crouch, Bridget Love, and Katherine Watson, as well as clarinettists Stephanie Harnden and Madeline Crawford. For more information about the event, please visit thekyo.org.

The Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will be showing off a recently-acquired set of timpani at its season closing concert (under the direction of new Music Director, Colin Clarke) on May 12. The timpani were donated by the Hazlewood Family in memory of Lane Hazlewood, “a passionate orchestra dad, music teacher, and active musician in the local community.” Speaking about the gift, his wife Kathryn noted that “our passion for HPYO is family-wide, so it seemed such a fitting tribute to donate instruments to a cause that gives joy to so many audiences and gave Lane his livelihood and his passion. I dedicate these timpani with joy on behalf of Lane’s daughters Debbie and Pam, Pam’s husband Tyler and their son, the grandson Lane adored.”

It’s been a busy few weeks in Windsor, Ontario with the concluding concerts in John Morris Russell’s eleven-year tenure with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra – and a bit of a community celebration to send the Maestro on his way. We’d like to join in and wish JMR all the best in his new adventures with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra: his contributions to Windsor – and to Canadian orchestras and music-making – have been noteworthy. Thank you!
