Sunday, November 23 at Toronto’s Koerner Hall, Esprit Orchestra (led by founding music director Alex Pauk, with viola soloist Teng Li and solo singers from the Canadian Children’s Opera Company) presents a program featuring four works not previously heard by Toronto audiences. The concert includes Canadian premieres of music by Yoji Yuasa, and Henri Dutilleux, and world premieres of music commissioned by Esprit by Canadians Douglas Schmidt and Adam Scime. Each work explores a very distinct sonic world. Dutilleux’s The Shadows of Time commemorates the 50th anniversary of the end of WW ll and includes an episode alluding to the heroism of Anne Frank and the discovery of her diary; Schmidt’s Just a Stranger Here Myself explores the dislocation of cosmopolitan travelers, and Scime’s Rise considers themes of global warming.
