The Windsor Symphony Orchestra is continuing with a pleasant summer tradition of small ensemble concerts in area parks in 2014. This year, the program features the WSO woodwind quintet (July 13), and the orchestra’s brass quintet, performing in Amherstburg (August 16) and the Windsor Sculpture Park (August 17). Admission is free.
OC is proud to have some chamber music festivals within its associate ranks, and we’re celebrating them today:
We salute the 20th anniversary of the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, which this year runs from July 24 to August 7 in multiple venues in Canada’s capital. This year’s festival, curated by artistic director Roman Borys, ranges from Bach to an ambitious new music stream, and includes artists ranging from the Lemon Bucket Orkestra (featuring one of Orchestras Canada’s former summer student works, composer/performer Mike Romaniak) to emerging artists on the Siskind Snapshots series to the National Youth Orchestra of Canada to favourite pianists Janina Fialkowska and Jon Kimura Parker.
Toronto Summer Music, curated by artistic director Douglas McNabney, runs from July 22 to August 12, and includes a significant educational component, along with an ambitious array of performances. This year’s festival shines a light on the music of the early 20th century, and features such performers as the Emerson String Quartet and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, in a rare summer appearance before their European festival tour.
