The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) announced that the contract for Music Director Peter Oundjian has been extended through the end of the orchestra’s 95th concert season in 2016-17. Toronto-born Peter Oundjian is the 10th Music Director in the history of the TSO. With the contract extension, Mr. Oundjian will be the longest serving Music Director since Sir Andrew Davis (1975-1987), who now serves as Conductor Laureate.
Congratulations to clarinetist Éric Abramovitz, violinist Marie Bégin, cellist Amaryllis Jarczyk, and pianist Thierry Perron, all of whom will perform with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec on April 27, in a program designed to showcase outstanding younger musicians. They were each chosen by the OSQ’s resident artist, pianist Alain Lefèvre, for the opportunity.
Symphony Nova Scotia issued a media release last week to express the group’s collective sorrow at the death of Cape Breton songstress (and long-time SNS collaborator) Rita MacNeil. Speaking about her, an SNS member said, “Rita was always kind, gentle, and self-effacing and a pleasure to work with. Symphony Nova Scotia first performed with Rita in the late eighties. The sold out concerts featured music from her album ‘Flying on Your Own’ and became the inspiration for the orchestra’s ground breaking Maritime Pops Series.” Her last performance with the orchestra took place in March 2013 during East Coast Music Week for “CBC Presents A Sound Celebration”.
