Last week, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra announced details of its 22nd annual New Music Festival, scheduled to run from January 28 to February 2, 2013. Distinguished Guest Composer is the legendary Steve Reich, and Distinguished Guest Artist is Dame Evelyn Glennie, last seen at the festival in 2011 for the world premiere of Vincent Ho‘s percussion concerto The Shaman. Other distinguished performers include members of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Elmer Iseler Singers, the Winnipeg Singers, bass clarinetist Jeff Reilly, avant-pop group Royal Canoe, and numerous student ensembles from area university programs. Featured composers include Vincent Ho, Jim Hiscott, Christos Hatzis, Peter Togni, Andrew Staniland, Malcolm Forsyth, New Zealander Gareth Farr, and Grammy Award-winning violinist Sarah Neufeld of Montreal’s Arcade Fire.
The venue for most – but not all – of the festivities is Winnipeg’s Centennial Concert Hall. WSO music director Alexander Mickelthwate conducts many of the concerts.
