Last night and tonight (May 27 and 28), the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra is presenting its 2nd annual New Music Festival at the Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, Rozsa Centre, University of Calgary. The two-concert festival is led by former Associate Conductor Pierre Simard, and pre-concert talks will be given each evening by composer Rodney Sharman. The festival features a pair of world premieres by Joel Balzun and Pierre Simard, and will also include Matthew Hindson’s Violin Concerto No. 1 (Australian Postcards), with soloist Lara St. John, works by Canadians Michael Oesterle, David Eagle, Glenn Buhr and Linda Bouchard, and international composers John Cage, Jennifer Higdon and Michael Daugherty.
