In the last week, we’ve happened across a number of resources designed specifically for directors of not-for-profit organizations, and we heartily commend them to you.
First up, there’s a treasure trove of resources posted on the website of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, designed specifically for directors of charities and not for profits. They include:
• Liability Indemnification and Insurance for Directors of Not-for-Profit Organizations
• 20 Questions Directors of Not-for-Profit Organizations Should Ask about Fiduciary Duties
• 20 Questions Directors of Not-for-profit Organizations Should Ask about Risk
• 20 Questions Directors Should Ask about Responding to Allegations of Corporate Wrongdoing
• 20 Questions Directors Should Ask about the Role of the Human Resources and Compensation Committee
You can access free downloads of these resources here.
We also spent some quality time recently with The Principles Workbook: Steering Your Board Toward Good Governance and Ethical Practice. The workbook is a joint effort between Independent Sector and BoardSource, two highly-regarded American organizations. While a Canadian reader will need to do some “translation”, the fundamentals are similar and the workbook is a clearly laid-out primer for anyone serving (or considering service) on a board of directors. You can download the workbook for free, here.
