First up, there’s a treasure trove of resources posted on the website of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, designed specifically for directors of charities and not for profits.  They include:

We also spent some quality time recently with The Principles Workbook:  Steering Your Board Toward Good Governance and Ethical Practice.  The workbook is a joint effort between Independent Sector and BoardSource, two highly-regarded American organizations.  While a Canadian reader will need to do some “translation”, the fundamentals are similar and the workbook is a clearly laid-out primer for anyone serving (or considering service) on a board of directors.  You can download the workbook for free, here.
